2009 Surrey English Sporting Championship Southdown SGC Monday 31st August 2009 28 Surrey shooters turned out for this year's English Sporting Surrey Championship, held at Southdown Sporting Gun Club on monday 31 August. Beautiful sunny Bank Holiday weather was enjoyed by over 170 shooters in total throughout the challenging but enjoyable 100-bird shoot that had been made laid on by Dave Peckham and his team. Most of the Surrey committee turned out, in addition to the usual Sporting suspects, and it turned out that day belonged to our Chairman, Adrian Berry, who shot a fantastic 93 to claim the County Championship title and trophy. His score was two clays behind overall winners, Adrian Ballham and Jez Towell and only one less than Richard Faulds and George Digweed! After shooting such a high score, Adrian was asked what his secret was. He replied that it was not such a bad score, considering that he shot the whole layout standing on one leg! Ben Davies was runner up with 89, with Martin Rudling hot on his heels in third place with 88. Martin's score was enough to secure him the veterans title, beating runner-up Tony Joannides by just two clays. The ladies champion was katie Hancock scoring a creditable 68 and top Surrey Colt was Jack Barnes who completed the course with a solid 50. Unfortunately, there were no junior entries this year.
