2010 Surrey English Sporting Championship Southdown SGC Sunday 7th March The Surrey English Sporting Championships were held at Southdown on 7 March, with a good turnout of over 30 Surrey shooters enjoying a welcome sunny day’s shooting, despite the brisk wind. As always, the Peckham family had set a testing but fair course. A variety of deceptive speeds and angles kept interest high throughout, but punished any lapses in concentration. Add in a smattering of distant midis off the Southdown cherry-pickers and you had a course worthy of the county championship.Particular congratulations are therefore due to Tony Burt, who won the Surrey title with 84, and also joint runners-up Anthony Kay and Jonathan Ward, both on 80.Martin Rudling topped the Veteran’s class with 74 to hold on to his title for another year, highest Surrey lady was Caroline Cheeseman, and Jack Barnes also took the Colt’s title for a second year running. Sadly Surrey will be losing Jack’s talents this month as his father Clive has accepted the ‘keepers position at Hodnet Hall and the family will be moving north to within a stone’s throw of the West Midlands Shooting Ground. We’ll miss you Clive, but are sure we’ll see you soon, when was the English Open again?
